Bikes for Books

The Free Masons of Maine have a new program going on in the Ames & Weymouth Schools for Kindergarten through Grade 5 students. This program is called "Bikes for Books". The program is a reading incentive designed for children in the elementary grades. Each student is asked to read as many books as they can between January 1 and April 14. Students will record books read at home on the  homework reading chart. After the chart is completed, the student will put it in the appropriate container for their class.
In April, members of your local lodges will go to school during an All School Share with new bikes, helmets and t-shirts to draw one chart out of each container (one boy and one girl) from each grade. The winning student will receive a new bike, helmet and t-shirt to take home.
This program is going to be presented in the Captain Albert Stevens School, East Belfast, Nickerson, Drinkwater, Ames, Weymouth and Searsport Elementary Schools.
Members of your local lodges are collecting funds to help pay for this program. Your donations would be greatly appreciated to help us pay for bikes, helmets and t-shirts.
Today was our kick off event held at the Ames School. Jim Roberts presented a $250.00 check on behalf of the Veterans of Foreign War in Belfast to help fund this project. (Picture L to R, Jason Fuller, Jim Roberts and Travis Reynolds)
