Principal of the Day

Hi.  My name is Danielle Hicock and I am a 4th grade student at the Ames School.  This year I entered the Principal of the Day essay contest and I won.  Here is my essay.

“I should be the principal for a day because I’m extremely kind. I’m also very mindful. Finally, I’m aware of what is going on around me.

I should be the principal for a day because I’m extremely kind. I would speak with students using a gentle, honest voice to encourage students to do their best. Also, I would be calm with students who are having a hard time. Finally, I’ll know that students are doing their best.

Another reason why I should be the principal for a day is that I’m very mindful. I would know what I’m doing (after an explanation). I would also know how and when I should do something.

I should be the principal for a day because I’m kind and mindful, but mostly because I’m aware of what is going on around me. I would help whoever needs help. I know how to deal with friendship problems. I’ll be sure that everyone is nice to one another.

It’s a big responsibility to be the principal. Things may get hard, and there may be fun too. I can handle it all. Tough times will be harder than usual, but I can survive. I know it. If everyone has faith in me, the school will be very happy.”

When I arrived at school today I met with Mrs. Miller to create a schedule for the day.  In my schedule we included visiting the superintendent’s office, Weymouth School and then back to Ames School.

At the Central Office I got to meet all the people that work there.  I met Miss Robin that pays the district’s bills.  I met Ms. Davis that works to answer the phone and help people with everything they need.  Ms. Sutfin works with the superintendent to help him stay organized.  I talked with Dr. Knowles, our superintendent, and got to ask him some questions.  I asked him about his job.  He told me he takes care of the buildings in RSU #71.  He takes care of the facilities, he works with teachers and he manages the budget.  Dr. Knowles favorite part of his job is working with students and staff.  He is a doctor because he got four degrees.

After the Central Office I went to Weymouth and I read to the students in each of the classrooms, in Pre-K we were outside and sat on a parachute to read. I got to eat lunch down in the cafeteria with everyone. After lunch I went out to recess and asked the students if they wanted to clean up the playground or play. About ⅓ of the students wanted to play and the rest cleaned up.

When I returned back at Ames School I met with Mrs. Smail and I did activities in the classrooms. In the 2nd and 3rd grade we played Zingo and in 4th and 5th grade we played division games. At 2:00 the entire school went outside for a clean up of the playground.

I enjoyed my day, all of the students were very good. When I was leaving Weymouth all of the students wanted me to come back.
